So, what is cardamom pods?
Cardamom pods are the whole seed capsules harvested from plants in the ginger family, primarily within the genera Elettaria and Amomum. These perennial herbs are cultivated extensively in tropical regions, including India, Guatemala, and Indonesia. The pods are gathered by hand when mature and then dried, either by sun exposure or in commercial curing kilns, to preserve the flavorful seeds enclosed inside the outer husk.
This ingredient is commonly found in packaged foods such as spiced chai teas, curry pastes, whole spice blends like garam masala, artisanal rice mixes, Scandinavian baked goods, and craft spirits. Cardamom pods are classified as vegan because they are entirely of botanical origin. Standard commercial harvesting, drying, and sorting processes rely exclusively on plant material and do not require any animal-derived processing aids or byproducts.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
