So, what is kapas-kapas?

Kapas-kapas is a Malay and Indonesian term referring to the cotton plant, which typically denotes cottonseed or cottonseed oil when listed on food packaging. This ingredient is obtained directly from the seeds of cultivated cotton plants belonging to the genus Gossypium. To produce culinary oil or derivatives, harvested cottonseeds are cleaned, crushed, and subjected to mechanical pressing or solvent extraction to extract the vegetable fat, which is subsequently refined, bleached, and deodorized. It appears on ingredient declarations for commercial frying oils, blended vegetable shortenings, packaged savory snacks, canned goods, and processed baked items produced in Southeast Asian markets.

This ingredient receives a vegan verdict because it is entirely of botanical origin. The agricultural cultivation of cotton plants and the subsequent industrial milling and refining processes used to manufacture cottonseed oil rely solely on plant matter, mechanical pressing, and chemical or thermal refining methods. Standard commercial processing does not utilize animal tissues, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids at any stage. Consequently, foods that include kapas-kapas on their ingredient labels are completely compatible with a vegan diet.
