So, what is a lait?
The phrase "a lait" is a French label fragment, most commonly a typographical variation or scanning error for "au lait" (meaning "with milk") or part of the phrase "à base de lait" (meaning "milk-based"). Rather than being a single specific substance, it is a label descriptor indicating that the food item contains dairy milk.
Dairy milk is collected from lactating mammals, primarily cows, goats, or sheep, and is processed through pasteurization, concentration, or spray-drying into milk powder. This descriptor frequently appears on imported European goods, confections such as milk chocolate, sweet breads like pain au lait, baked pastries, creamy dressings, and prepared meals.
this item is not vegan because the phrasing denotes the presence of animal milk. Whether the final formulation includes whole milk, skimmed milk, whey, or dairy fat, these components are directly sourced from animals, making any product bearing this label unsuitable for a plant-based diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
