So, what is alcol?
Alcol is the Italian word for alcohol, which commonly refers to ethyl alcohol or ethanol on food labels. It is widely used as a solvent for flavorings, an antimicrobial preservative sprayed on packaged baked goods, and a base component in alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is typically produced through the fermentation of plant-based sugars derived from corn, grains, sugarcane, or fruits, or through petrochemical synthesis.
alcol is possibly vegan because its production methods and source materials vary, and labels rarely specify them. While most ethyl alcohol originates from plants, certain alcoholic products are clarified using animal-derived processing aids, such as gelatin, egg whites, or isinglass. Furthermore, the broad term can sometimes refer to fatty alcohols, which can be derived from plant oils or animal fats like tallow. A vegan certification or direct confirmation from the manufacturer is necessary to determine whether animal substances were used during its production.
