So, what is algues marine?
"Algues marine" is a French label term that translates to "marine algae" or "seaweed" in English. It refers to macroscopic aquatic algae, including various species of red, brown, and green seaweeds harvested from oceans and coastal waters. Commercial seaweed is either gathered from wild marine beds or cultivated on ocean farms. Once harvested, the algae are rinsed to remove excess sand and seawater, then dried using sun exposure or mechanical dehydrators before being milled into flakes, processed into powders, or left whole. It is commonly found in broths, seasoning blends, snack foods, sushi sheets, and plant-based seafood alternatives.
algues marine is vegan because the ingredient is exclusively of algal origin and involves no animal species. Algae are photosynthetic organisms classified outside the animal kingdom. Standard harvesting and drying methods do not require animal-derived inputs, animal by-products, or animal processing aids, making the ingredient inherently compliant with a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
