So, what is allium sativum?
Allium sativum is the Latin botanical name for garlic, a flowering plant in the amaryllis family. It is cultivated globally for its edible underground bulb, which consists of several individual cloves. Food manufacturers produce ingredients from this crop by harvesting the bulbs and then drying, grinding, crushing, or distilling the cloves into powders, granules, purees, or extracted essential oils.
On commercial product labels, Allium sativum appears in a wide variety of savory food items such as pasta sauces, spice blends, marinades, salad dressings, soups, and prepared frozen meals. It is also frequently listed as an ingredient in herbal dietary supplements and botanical extracts.
This ingredient is vegan because it is entirely of plant origin. The cultivation and mechanical processing of garlic do not involve animal tissues, animal byproducts, or animal-derived manufacturing aids, making it suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
