So, what is aluminum lake?
An aluminum lake is a water-insoluble pigment created by chemically binding a soluble dye to an aluminum substrate, typically aluminum hydroxide. This process transforms water-soluble food colorings, such as synthetic certified dyes, into insoluble powders that disperse evenly in fats and oils without dissolving or bleeding. Manufacturers produce the alumina base from mineral compounds, while the food dyes affixed to the substrate are synthesized from petroleum sources.
Food manufacturers frequently add aluminum lakes to items with low moisture or high fat content, including coated candies, chewing gums, cake frostings, snack foods, and pharmaceutical tablet coatings. The ingredient is considered vegan because both the aluminum carrier and the bound synthetic colorants are created entirely through mineral processing and chemical synthesis, involving no animal products or byproducts during production.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
