So, what is barberry?
Barberry is a small, tart red fruit harvested from shrubs belonging to the genus Berberis, most commonly Berberis vulgaris. The plant grows naturally and is cultivated in temperate and subtropical regions across Europe, Asia, and North America, with significant agricultural production centered in Iran. Harvesting involves gathering the ripe berries from the branches, after which they are washed and typically sun-dried or dehydrated into shelf-stable fruits. On commercial food labels, barberry appears in dried fruit blends, herbal teas, fruit preserves, jams, confectioneries, dietary supplements, and regional culinary dishes.
Barberry is classified as vegan because it is entirely of plant origin. The berry is cultivated, picked, and dried using standard agricultural practices that do not require animal components, animal-derived clarifying agents, or animal processing aids. As an unadulterated botanical ingredient, barberry is naturally free of animal products and fits a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
