So, what is biffarom?
Biffarom is a Swedish ingredient term that translates to beef aroma or beef flavoring in English. It refers to a flavoring preparation obtained directly from cattle tissues. The substance is typically manufactured by simmering beef meat, bones, or tallow into concentrated extracts, or through the enzymatic hydrolysis of bovine proteins to isolate concentrated savory flavor compounds.
This ingredient appears on food packaging for savory items sold in Sweden and surrounding Nordic markets. Common products containing it include bouillon cubes, dehydrated soup mixes, packaged gravies, spice blends, and meat-flavored potato chips.
biffarom is not vegan because it is made from animal tissues sourced from slaughtered cattle. Since it inherently requires animal slaughter for its extraction, any product listing biffarom is derived from animals and unsuitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
