So, what is c. cohnii oil?

C. cohnii oil is an oil extracted from Crypthecodinium cohnii, a species of single-celled marine microalgae containing docosahexaenoic acid. Manufacturers produce this ingredient by cultivating the microalgae in closed, controlled fermentation tanks fed with nutrients and a carbon source. Once the algae reach maturity, the biomass is harvested, the cell walls are broken, and the oil is extracted and refined through mechanical or solvent-based methods.

This oil frequently appears on ingredient labels for infant formulas, vegan omega-3 dietary supplements, fortified plant milks, and specialized nutritional foods. It serves as a substitute for traditional fish oil in products formulated to supply long-chain fatty acids.

c. cohnii oil is vegan because it is entirely of microbial origin. Its production relies solely on microalgae grown in bioreactors, meaning no animal tissues, animal byproducts, or marine animals are involved in its sourcing or manufacturing.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like c. cohnii oil?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
