So, what is carbon dioxide?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a colorless, odorless gas that occurs naturally in the Earth's atmosphere. It is produced by the combustion of organic materials and the respiration of living organisms. In the food industry, carbon dioxide is used as a versatile ingredient, serving various purposes such as carbonation, preservation, and cooling. Carbon dioxide gas dissolves in water, producing carbonic acid, which gives carbonated drinks their characteristic fizz. It is also commonly used to preserve foods like meats and vegetables by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi. In addition, carbon dioxide is used in cryogenic freezing, where it is used to rapidly cool food products.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like carbon dioxide?

We've built a database of 49359 ingredients (and growing), classified as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "maybe vegan".

We use it in our vegan ingredients scanner, which is the best way to avoid non-vegan ingredients - you take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
