So, what is chalk?
Chalk is a fine-grained, soft sedimentary rock primarily composed of calcium carbonate. It is a common ingredient in various food products, particularly in East Asian cuisine. The addition of chalk to foods such as tofu and noodles is believed to enhance their texture and improve their overall quality. Chalk is also used as an anti-caking agent in powdered foods like spices, baking powder, and confectioner's sugar. However, while it is generally considered safe for consumption in small amounts, excessive intake of chalk may lead to health problems such as constipation, digestive issues, and even kidney stones.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
