So, what is dontlait?

"dontlait" is a French labeling fragment, usually written as "dont lait", which translates to "including milk" in English. It is not a distinct substance, but rather a label descriptor indicating that an ingredient or product contains dairy milk. This phrase commonly appears on French-language packaging within allergen declarations, sub-ingredient listings, or nutrition panels for products such as chocolates, baked goods, prepared meals, and processed snacks.

Milk is a biological fluid produced by female mammals, most commonly cows, goats, and sheep. In the food industry, it is harvested through commercial dairy farming and used either directly as liquid milk or processed into secondary ingredients such as butter, milk powder, whey, and casein. Food manufacturers use this term on labels to comply with food safety regulations that require clear disclosure of dairy allergens.

Because "dontlait" directly specifies the inclusion of milk obtained from animals, it is not vegan. A vegan diet excludes all foods and ingredients derived from animals, including dairy products. Any food that displays this phrase contains animal milk, which makes the product unsuitable for a vegan diet.
