So, what is e1176?
The code e1176 is not an officially recognized food additive number and most likely appears on ingredient lists as a typographical or optical character recognition error for calcium carbonate, properly designated as E170. Calcium carbonate is an inorganic compound derived by milling natural limestone, marble, or chalk, or produced synthetically through the precipitation of calcium ions with carbonate ions. Food manufacturers use it in baked goods, breakfast cereals, plant-based dairy alternatives, confections, and dietary supplements as a white food coloring, firming agent, acidity regulator, and calcium nutrient.
This ingredient is classified as vegan because its production relies exclusively on mineral and synthetic sources without the use of animal products or processing aids. Natural calcium carbonate is quarried directly from geological mineral deposits, while the synthetic form is created through standard chemical synthesis. Because neither pathway involves animals or animal-derived derivatives, products listing this substance under a scanned misprint or its proper designation are suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
