So, what is e965?
E965 is the European food additive code for maltitol and maltitol syrup, a type of sugar alcohol used as a bulk sweetener and texturizer. It is manufactured by the catalytic hydrogenation of maltose, which is obtained through the enzymatic breakdown of plant starches such as corn, wheat, or tapioca. This ingredient is commonly found in sugar-free and reduced-calorie foods, including chocolates, chewing gums, hard candies, baked goods, and dietary supplements.
E965 is classified as vegan because it is derived entirely from plant materials and chemical synthesis. No animal tissues, animal fats, or animal-derived processing aids are used during the starch hydrolysis or hydrogenation steps. Because commercial manufacturing relies strictly on cereal starches and mineral catalysts, E965 poses no risk of animal origin and is suitable for vegan consumption.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
