So, what is enriched flour bleached?
Enriched flour bleached is refined wheat flour that has been treated with whitening agents and fortified with specific micronutrients lost during the milling process. It is made by milling the endosperm of wheat grains, treating the resulting flour with bleaching agents such as chlorine gas or benzoyl peroxide to accelerate aging and lighten the color, and subsequently blending in designated vitamins and minerals. This ingredient is commonly found in packaged baked goods, sliced white breads, cookies, pastries, crackers, and pre-made cake mixes.
This ingredient is vegan because all of its components are derived from plant, mineral, chemical, or microbial sources. The primary grain base comes entirely from wheat. The bleaching agents utilized in commercial processing are synthetic chemical compounds, and the standard enrichment blend consisting of iron, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and folic acid is manufactured via microbial fermentation or chemical synthesis rather than extracted from animals. Because no animal tissues, animal derivatives, or animal byproducts are used at any stage of its production, enriched bleached flour meets vegan standards.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
