So, what is fd&c yellow 6?
FD&C Yellow 6, also known internationally as Sunset Yellow FCF or E110, is a synthetic orange-yellow azo dye used as an artificial coloring agent. It is produced industrially through chemical synthesis using aromatic hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. Manufacturers frequently add this coloring to a wide variety of items, including sodas, powdered drink mixes, candies, baked goods, breakfast cereals, packaged snack foods, and gelatin desserts. It also commonly appears in non-food formulations such as cosmetics, nutritional supplements, and pharmaceuticals.
FD&C Yellow 6 is vegan because its origin is entirely synthetic and free from animal sources. No animal tissues, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids are used during its manufacturing process. Because the ingredient is sourced strictly from petroleum hydrocarbons and mineral compounds, it consistently qualifies as vegan across all food and beverage applications.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
