So, what is hexamine?
Hexamine, also known as methenamine, is a white crystalline powder with a slightly bitter taste. It is commonly used as a food preservative and in the production of plastics and resins. Hexamine is also found in some medicinal products, such as urinary tract antiseptics. When heated, hexamine releases formaldehyde gas, which can be toxic if inhaled in large quantities. However, when used in small amounts as a food preservative, hexamine poses no significant risk to human health. Its antimicrobial properties make it a popular ingredient in processed foods, particularly canned meats and fish.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
