So, what is hide glue?
Hide glue, also known as animal glue, is a protein-based adhesive derived from the collagen of animal hides and connective tissues. It has been used for centuries as a versatile adhesive in woodworking, bookbinding, and musical instrument-making. Hide glue is made by boiling the hides and bones of animals to extract the collagen, which is then dried and ground into a fine powder. When mixed with water, the powder forms a strong, transparent adhesive that dries quickly and can be easily sanded or shaped. Although it has been largely replaced by synthetic adhesives in modern manufacturing, hide glue is still prized by many craftsmen for its strength, durability, and natural properties.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
