So, what is jmaf?
The label term jmaf stands for jarabe de maíz de alta fructosa, which is Spanish for high-fructose corn syrup. It is a liquid sweetener manufactured by milling corn to extract starch, which enzymes then break down into glucose. Further processing with microbial enzymes converts a portion of that glucose into fructose to achieve the desired level of sweetness.
Manufacturers commonly use this syrup in soft drinks, fruit beverages, baked goods, packaged snacks, jams, breakfast cereals, and savory sauces. It functions as a sweetening agent, helps retain moisture, and improves shelf life across a wide variety of processed food items.
This ingredient is vegan because its raw material is corn, a plant, and its processing relies on microbial enzymes rather than animal-derived inputs. Since no animal products or animal byproducts are involved at any stage of manufacturing, it is fully compatible with a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
