So, what is karnaubavax?
Karnaubavax is the Swedish term for carnauba wax, a common food glazing agent also known as E903. It is extracted from the leaves of the carnauba palm, Copernicia prunifera, a tree native to northeastern Brazil. Workers harvest the dried fronds and beat them to release the powdery wax, which is subsequently melted, filtered, and refined. Food producers use this substance to impart a glossy sheen and prevent melting or sticking in products such as hard candies, chewing gum, chocolate coatings, and fresh fruit surfaces.
karnaubavax is vegan because it is derived purely from plant matter without the use of animal sources or animal byproducts. In food production, it frequently serves as a plant-based alternative to insect-derived glazes like shellac and beeswax. Because its raw material and extraction processes involve only botanical sources, products containing karnaubavax are suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
