So, what is lanogene?
Lanogene is a commercial trade name for lanolin oil, a liquid lipid fraction derived from whole lanolin. Lanolin is a waxy substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of domestic sheep to protect and condition their wool. To make lanogene, wool gathered from sheep shearing is washed in a scouring process, after which the crude wool grease is recovered, refined, and separated through solvent crystallization into liquid lanolin oil and solid lanolin wax.
On consumer labels, this ingredient most often appears in cosmetics, lip care products, topical ointments, and occasionally in food applications such as chewing gum bases. lanogene is not vegan because it is an animal-derived substance. Because it is obtained directly from sheep fleece, any ingredient listed as lanogene is an animal byproduct and is not suitable for a vegan lifestyle.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
