So, what is lanoline?
Lanolin, also known as wool wax or wool grease, is a natural wax extracted from sheep's wool. It is a yellowish, viscous substance with a distinct odor that is widely used in the cosmetic industry as an emollient and moisturizer due to its ability to absorb and retain moisture. Lanolin is also used in the production of various pharmaceutical and industrial products, such as lubricants, rust-preventive coatings, and leather dressings. Its unique chemical composition, consisting of a complex mixture of esters, alcohols, and fatty acids, makes it an essential ingredient in many formulations that require a softening or protective effect. Despite its widespread use, lanolin can cause allergic reactions in some people, so it is important to patch test before using it on the skin.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
