So, what is natural & artificial flavour?

Natural and artificial flavour is a broad label term referring to a blend of flavoring agents derived from both natural materials and synthetic chemicals. The natural component is extracted through processes such as distillation or solvent extraction, while the artificial portion is synthesized in a laboratory, usually from petroleum-derived compounds. This blend is commonly listed on packaged foods such as cereals, baked goods, confections, beverages, and savory snacks to create or enhance specific tastes.

This ingredient is considered possibly vegan because the natural component can originate from either plant or animal materials. Plant-based sources include fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, and yeast. Animal-based sources can include dairy, eggs, meat, poultry, seafood, or castoreum. Artificial flavorings are typically synthetic and vegan, but the combined listing obscures the exact origin of the natural extracts.

Because food labeling regulations allow companies to omit the precise origins of flavoring agents, the label text alone does not indicate whether animal byproducts were used. A vegan certification on the packaging or direct confirmation from the food manufacturer is necessary to verify that the flavoring is entirely free from animal-derived ingredients.
