So, what is ocenol?
Ocenol is a commercial designation for technical-grade oleyl alcohol, an unsaturated fatty alcohol used primarily as an emulsifier, defoaming agent, and lubricant. It is produced through the chemical reduction or catalytic hydrogenation of fatty acids extracted from animal fats, such as cattle tallow and marine oils. While historically refined from sperm whale oil, industrial forms of ocenol rely on fat byproducts from livestock and fish processing. It most commonly appears as a processing aid in food production, a component of food-contact packaging materials, and an ingredient in cosmetic and pharmaceutical creams.
Ocenol is not vegan because it is derived directly from animal tissues. The manufacturing process depends on animal-based raw materials rather than plant oils or petrochemical precursors. Any food product, additive, or material manufactured with ocenol involves the use of slaughterhouse lipids, making it unsuitable for individuals following a vegan lifestyle.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
