So, what is oleoresin turmeric?
Oleoresin turmeric is a concentrated natural extract derived from the dried rhizomes of the turmeric plant, Curcuma longa. It is produced by grinding turmeric roots and using solvent extraction to separate the flavor compounds, essential oils, and curcuminoids, which provide its characteristic bright yellow-orange color. The solvent is subsequently removed, leaving a dense, viscous resin. Food manufacturers commonly use oleoresin turmeric as a natural coloring and flavoring agent in packaged goods such as processed snacks, plant-based dairy alternatives, baked goods, condiments, pickles, and dry seasoning blends.
This ingredient is classified as vegan because it is derived entirely from botanical sources. The manufacturing and extraction processes rely strictly on plant material and standard food-grade processing aids, without utilizing animal tissues, animal derivatives, or animal byproducts. Because no animal sources are involved in its cultivation or processing, oleoresin turmeric meets vegan standards.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
