So, what is orlon?
Orlon is a registered brand name for a synthetic acrylic fiber composed of polyacrylonitrile. Developed by the DuPont corporation, this material is manufactured through the chemical polymerization of acrylonitrile, a petroleum-derived monomer synthesized from petrochemical feedstocks like propylene and ammonia. Although Orlon is primarily utilized in textiles, apparel, and industrial fabrics, the term occasionally appears in food contexts on specialized food-contact materials such as beverage filtration media and tea bag mesh, or as an optical character recognition scanning error for conventional ingredients like onion.
Orlon is vegan because it is produced entirely from synthetic, mineral-based chemicals and requires no animal raw materials or animal byproducts during production. Whether the term appears on a label as an inert packaging textile or as a digital transcription error from an automated scanning app, the synthetic polymer contains no animal-derived components and is fully suitable for a vegan lifestyle.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
