So, what is peg-9 caprylate?

PEG-9 caprylate is a synthetic compound formed by reacting caprylic acid with polyethylene glycol. It functions primarily as an emulsifier and solubilizer, and it is found in certain dietary supplements, specialized food processing applications, and personal care formulations. While the polyethylene glycol component is produced synthetically from petroleum derivatives, the caprylic acid portion is a saturated fatty acid obtained from natural fats.

This ingredient is considered possibly vegan because caprylic acid can be derived from either plant or animal materials. Common plant sources include coconut oil and palm kernel oil, while animal sources typically include bovine tallow and dairy fat. Product ingredient lists rarely disclose the raw material source of the fatty acid. Therefore, a verified vegan certification on the packaging or direct confirmation from the manufacturer is required to ensure that the ingredient was made exclusively from plant-derived fats.
