PEG/PPG-17/18 dimethicone is a synthetic silicone polymer composed of dimethicone copolymerized with polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol. It is manufactured through chemical synthesis by reacting silicone, which is derived from mineral silica, with petrochemical-based ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. This compound functions primarily as a surfactant, conditioning agent, and emulsifier. While most frequently found in cosmetics, hair products, and skin lotions, it can also appear in specialized food processing environments as an antifoaming agent, lubricant, or surface-treatment additive.
This ingredient is classified as vegan because it is derived entirely from mineral and synthetic petrochemical sources. No animal tissues, animal byproducts, or animal-derived fatty acids are involved in the extraction of the raw elements or in the polymer synthesis process. As a result, PEG/PPG-17/18 dimethicone does not rely on any animal sources and meets vegan standards.
