So, what is pett?

Pett is the Estonian word for buttermilk, a dairy product traditionally made from the liquid remaining after churning butter from cultured cream. In modern commercial production, it is typically made by inoculating pasteurized skim milk or low-fat cow milk with lactic acid bacteria to produce a tart, slightly thick liquid. It is consumed directly as a beverage across the Baltic region and is commonly added to packaged baked goods, pancakes, marinades, sauces, dressings, and chilled soups to improve moisture, acidity, and texture.

This ingredient is classified as not vegan because it comes directly from the milk of cows. Since it is entirely an animal byproduct of the dairy industry, any food item that lists pett among its ingredients contains dairy components, making it unsuitable for individuals following a vegan diet.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like pett?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
