So, what is polydimethylsiloxane?
Polydimethylsiloxane is a silicone-based polymer that is commonly used as a food additive to prevent foaming or as an anti-caking agent. It has a unique chemical structure that gives it a high degree of heat stability and low toxicity, making it ideal for use in food processing. This ingredient is often used in fried foods, baked goods, and other processed foods to prevent them from sticking together or developing a foamy texture. Polydimethylsiloxane is odorless, tasteless, and does not affect the flavor or color of the food it is added to. While it is generally considered safe for human consumption, it is important to note that excessive consumption may cause gastrointestinal distress.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
