So, what is pune?
On a food label, "pune" is not a recognized culinary ingredient but rather a typographical error or optical character recognition scan failure for "prune." Prunes are dried European plums, specifically cultivated varieties of the tree Prunus domestica. They are produced by harvesting fresh plums and dehydrating them, typically through controlled hot-air tunnels or sun-drying, until the moisture content is significantly reduced. They appear in products such as snack bars, fruit spreads, baked goods, breakfast cereals, baby foods, and fruit juices.
The ingredient receives a vegan verdict because it is entirely of plant origin. The production process involves only fresh fruit and standard agricultural dehydration methods, requiring no animal tissues, dairy, gelatin, or animal-derived processing aids. Any product listing "pune" is simply using dried plum fruit, meaning the ingredient is completely plant-derived and compatible with a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
