So, what is quanternium?

Quanternium is a label misspelling of quaternium, which designates a class of quaternary ammonium salts used primarily as conditioning agents, preservatives, surfactants, and antistatic additives. These ingredients appear frequently on product labels for personal care items, hair conditioners, shampoos, styling gels, and skin creams.

These chemical compounds are synthesized by reacting tertiary amines with alkylating agents and long-chain fatty acids. The fatty acids utilized in manufacturing quaternium compounds are obtained from animal tallow, which is fat rendered from slaughtered livestock such as cows and sheep. The resulting ammonium salt provides smoothing and detangling properties by binding to protein fibers.

Because quaternium is derived from rendered animal fat, its verdict is not vegan. Any formulation listing this ingredient relies on components sourced from animal slaughter, making it unsuitable for individuals adhering to a vegan lifestyle.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like quanternium?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
