So, what is ramontchi?

Ramontchi, derived from the Malagasy name for the plant Flacourtia indica, refers to the edible fruit of a flowering shrub native to tropical Africa and parts of Asia, also known in English as the governor's plum. The fruit is typically harvested from the tree and consumed fresh, dried, or processed into a pulp or extract. On ingredient labels, ramontchi most commonly appears in specialty jams, fruit preserves, jellies, juices, syrups, and herbal tea blends.

Ramontchi is classified as vegan because it is an agricultural product derived entirely from a plant source. Standard commercial processing methods used to turn the raw fruit into food ingredients, such as washing, pulping, juicing, and pasteurizing, do not introduce animal tissues or animal-based processing aids. Because the ingredient is purely botanical and does not utilize animal derivatives at any stage of manufacturing, it is fully suitable for a vegan diet.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like ramontchi?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
