So, what is saltpetre?
Saltpetre, also known as potassium nitrate, is a naturally occurring mineral that is commonly used as a food preservative. It is a white crystalline powder with a slightly salty taste and a distinctive odor. Saltpetre is often used to cure meats, such as ham, bacon, and corned beef, by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. It works by releasing nitric oxide, which prevents the growth of harmful bacteria and enhances the flavor and texture of the meat. Saltpetre is also used in the production of fireworks, gunpowder, and fertilizer.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
