So, what is schalotten?
Schalotten, also known as shallots, are small, bulbous onions that have a milder and sweeter flavor compared to regular onions. These tear-inducing vegetables are commonly used in French and Southeast Asian cuisine to add depth and complexity to dishes. They have a thin, papery skin that needs to be removed before use, revealing a juicy, white interior that can be sliced, chopped, or minced. Schalotten can be used raw in salads or cooked in stews, sauces, and stir-fries. They are a versatile ingredient that can elevate any dish with their delicate flavor and subtle aroma.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
