So, what is silybum marianum?

Silybum marianum is the Latin scientific name for milk thistle, a flowering plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Native to the Mediterranean region, the plant is now cultivated globally for agricultural and commercial use. On food and beverage labels, this ingredient refers to dried aerial parts, crushed seeds, or standardized extracts such as silymarin. Manufacturers produce the extract by harvesting and drying the seeds, grinding them into a meal, and separating the botanical compounds using liquid extraction methods involving water or ethanol. It is commonly found in herbal teas, dietary supplements, fortified beverages, and specialty functional food products.

Silybum marianum is vegan because the ingredient is derived entirely from a botanical source. Both the raw plant material and the resulting extracts come exclusively from vegetation, with no animal tissue, fluids, or animal-derived processing aids utilized during farming or standard manufacturing. Consequently, foods and supplements containing Silybum marianum pose no conflict with a vegan lifestyle.
