So, what is smoked haddock?

Smoked haddock is the cured and smoked flesh of haddock, a species of saltwater marine fish belonging to the cod family. It is produced by filleting the fish, soaking the meat in a salt brine, and then exposing it to wood smoke, traditionally from oak or other hardwoods. Depending on the producer, it may be cold-smoked or hot-smoked, and it is sometimes treated with natural colorings like annatto to create a characteristic golden-yellow appearance. Smoked haddock is commonly sold as standalone fillets, but it is also widely used in prepared foods such as fish pies, chowders, kedgeree, risottos, and frozen seafood meals.

This ingredient is not vegan because it is obtained entirely from animals. The vegan diet excludes all forms of animal flesh, which includes finfish, shellfish, and other aquatic creatures. Since smoked haddock consists directly of fish tissue, any food product containing it is unsuitable for a vegan diet.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like smoked haddock?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
