So, what is svampe?

Svampe is the Danish and Norwegian word for mushrooms. On packaged food labels, this term denotes edible fungi, such as button mushrooms, portobello, or chanterelles. These organisms are commercially cultivated on controlled agricultural substrates such as compost, wood shavings, and straw, or they are gathered directly from the wild. After harvesting, they are cleaned and processed whole, sliced, canned, dried, or pureed for food production. Svampe is typically listed on savory grocery items sold in Scandinavian markets, including canned soups, pasta sauces, frozen pizzas, ready-made meals, and preserved vegetable medleys.

Svampe is classified as vegan because mushrooms belong to the kingdom of fungi and contain no animal products. Their cultivation, harvesting, and preparation rely on organic plant matter and mineral substrates without any animal inputs. Because this ingredient is exclusively of fungal origin, it contains no animal tissues or byproducts and is inherently suitable for a vegan diet.
