So, what is tammy?

On food labels, tammy is not an actual ingredient but an optical character recognition (OCR) scanning error or misspelling of tallow. Tallow is a rendered fat extracted from the fatty tissue of cattle or sheep. It is manufactured by cooking animal tissues at high temperatures to melt and separate the liquid fat from connective tissue and protein solids. In commercial food production, it is typically used as a frying medium, a shortening agent in pastries and pie crusts, and a richness enhancer in savory sauces, gravies, and packaged snacks.

This entry is classified as not vegan because it refers to rendered livestock fat. Obtaining tallow requires slaughtering animals, making any item containing it incompatible with a vegan lifestyle. Shoppers encountering this term in ingredient apps or digital text scans should check the physical packaging to verify the correct label wording, which almost always confirms tallow or another animal-derived fat.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like tammy?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
