So, what is theobromine?
Theobromine is a naturally occurring bitter alkaloid compound found primarily in cacao beans, tea leaves, and kola nuts. Commercially, it is most often extracted directly from the shells of cocoa beans, which are an agricultural byproduct of chocolate manufacturing, though it can also be produced synthetically through chemical synthesis. Food and supplement manufacturers list theobromine as an ingredient in dietary supplements, energy drinks, chewing gums, and chocolate-flavored food items.
This ingredient is classified as vegan because its commercial sources are strictly of plant or synthetic origin. The extraction process uses only cocoa bean waste and standard solvent extraction methods, while synthetic versions rely on chemical precursors rather than animal-derived materials. Because animal products, tissues, and byproducts are not utilized at any stage of its harvesting, extraction, or synthesis, theobromine is suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
