So, what is thiamin mononitrate?
Thiamin mononitrate is a stable, synthetic salt form of thiamin, commonly known as vitamin B1. It is manufactured commercially through chemical synthesis, combining a synthetically prepared thiamin base with nitric acid. The industrial synthesis relies on petrochemical and mineral chemical precursors rather than biological extraction from plants or animals.
Manufacturers frequently add this compound to processed foods to restore or increase their nutrient profile. It appears on ingredient labels for enriched grain products such as white flour, breakfast cereals, packaged breads, crackers, and dry pasta, as well as in meal replacement drinks and dietary vitamin supplements.
This ingredient is vegan because its commercial production is entirely synthetic. No animal tissues, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids are utilized during its chemical manufacturing process.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
