So, what is vaj?
Vaj is the Hungarian word for butter, which is a dairy product made from milk fat. It is produced by churning fresh or fermented cream, most commonly collected from cows, although milk from other mammals like goats or sheep can also be used. The mechanical churning process separates the solid butterfat from the liquid buttermilk, resulting in a dense emulsion of fat, water, and milk solids.
On ingredient lists, vaj appears in Hungarian food items such as baked goods, traditional pastries, confectionery, prepared sauces, and frozen ready meals. It is also frequently sold on its own as a cooking fat or table spread.
vaj is not vegan because it is a dairy product derived directly from animals. Since the standard production of vaj relies entirely on milk collected from dairy cattle or other livestock, any food product containing this ingredient includes animal-derived components and is unsuitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
