So, what is valkosipuliuute?
Valkosipuliuute is a Finnish term that translates to garlic extract in English. It is a concentrated flavoring substance derived directly from the bulbs of the garlic plant, Allium sativum. Manufacturers produce garlic extract by crushing or macerating garlic cloves and extracting the aromatic oils and flavor compounds using methods such as steam distillation, alcohol extraction, or pressing with plant-based carrier oils. This concentrated flavoring is widely utilized to provide consistent garlic taste and aroma in savory processed foods, including salad dressings, marinades, packaged sauces, ready-made meals, snack foods, and seasoning blends.
Valkosipuliuute is classified as vegan because its raw material is entirely of botanical origin. The standard production and refining methods rely exclusively on physical extraction or vegetable-based solvents, without the involvement of animal tissues, dairy, or animal-derived processing aids. Because the extract comes strictly from a cultivated vegetable, products listing valkosipuliuute are suitable for individuals following a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
