So, what is cassia occidentalis?

Cassia occidentalis is the botanical Latin name for coffee senna, a flowering plant in the legume family Fabaceae. On ingredient labels, it refers to the leaves, roots, or seeds of this plant. It is primarily found in herbal teas, caffeine-free coffee alternatives made from roasted seeds, traditional botanical formulations, and dietary supplements.

The ingredient is made directly from the harvested plant. The seeds or aerial parts are collected, cleaned, dried, and milled into a coarse or fine powder. For use as a beverage substitute, the seeds undergo roasting prior to grinding. Liquid extracts are produced by steeping the dried botanical material in solvents such as water or ethanol, followed by filtration.

Cassia occidentalis is vegan because it is derived entirely from a plant source. No animal products, animal byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids are used in its cultivation, harvesting, or standard manufacturing processes.

How to quickly find the source of ingredients like cassia occidentalis?

We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
