So, what is lengkuas?
Lengkuas is the Indonesian and Malay name for galangal, an aromatic rhizome belonging to the ginger family. It is native to Southeast Asia and is harvested from the underground stems of the plant. To prepare it for use in food manufacturing, the rhizome is washed and then either sold fresh, frozen, dried, or ground into a powder. It frequently appears on ingredient lists for Southeast Asian food products, such as packaged curry pastes, marinades, spice rubs, instant soup bases, and prepared sauces.
Lengkuas is vegan because it is a direct plant agricultural product with no animal involvement. The cultivation, harvesting, and physical processing of the root into fresh or powdered forms rely solely on botanical sources and standard mechanical methods. Because no animal tissues, byproducts, or animal-derived processing aids are utilized at any stage of its production, lengkuas is entirely suitable for vegans.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
