So, what is natural carrot extractives?
Natural carrot extractives are food-coloring and flavoring agents derived directly from the edible taproots of carrots. They are produced by washing, crushing, and extracting the pigments and flavor compounds from raw carrots using mechanical pressing or food-grade solvent extraction. This process isolates the natural carotenoids, particularly beta-carotene, which provide a yellow, orange, or reddish tint. Food manufacturers frequently use these extractives in baked goods, margarines, soups, dressings, plant-based dairy alternatives, confectionery, and fruit beverages.
This ingredient is vegan because it is derived entirely from plant matter and does not involve animal sources. Carrots are standard botanical crops, and the methods used to extract their color and aroma rely on physical separation or common solvents that do not require animal-derived additives or processing aids. Because the entire production chain relies solely on vegetable materials and synthetic or plant-derived processing inputs, natural carrot extractives are completely free of animal products and suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
