So, what is amla?
Amla is the Hindi name for the Indian gooseberry, which is the edible fruit of the deciduous tree Phyllanthus emblica. Native to tropical and subtropical Asia, the sour fruit is harvested directly from the tree. Processors wash the fruit and typically either press it for juice, dehydrate and mill it into a fine powder, or steep it in water or food-grade solvents to create concentrated botanical extracts.
Food and beverage manufacturers list amla in fruit juices, herbal teas, functional drink blends, dietary supplements, jams, chutneys, and traditional seasoning powders. The ingredient also appears frequently in personal care items, particularly hair oils, conditioners, and facial cleansers.
Amla is classified as vegan because it is a purely botanical product. Neither the whole fruit nor its derived powders and extracts contain animal materials, and standard commercial processing methods do not rely on animal-derived processing aids.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
