So, what is anis etoile?

Anis etoile is the French term for star anise, a spice derived from the star-shaped fruit of the Illicium verum tree, an evergreen plant native to parts of East and Southeast Asia. The fruits are harvested just before they ripen and are dried, typically in the sun or using commercial dehydrators, until they harden into fragrant, dark reddish-brown pods. The spice is utilized whole, ground into a fine powder, or distilled into essential oils and flavorings. It frequently appears on ingredient labels for baked goods, confectionery, spiced teas, alcoholic beverages, spice blends, and savory sauces.

Anis etoile is vegan because it is entirely of botanical origin. Cultivating, harvesting, and dehydrating the fruit requires no animal products, and the standard manufacturing methods do not introduce animal-derived processing aids or carriers. As a purely plant-based agricultural ingredient, it contains no animal substances and is entirely suitable for a vegan diet.
