So, what is carica papaya?
Carica papaya is the Latin botanical name for the papaya plant, a tropical fruit tree native to the tropical Americas. On ingredient labels, this term refers to derivatives from the papaya tree, including its fruit, seeds, leaves, or extracted latex. Manufacturers produce these ingredients by harvesting, washing, and processing the raw plant material into purees, dried powders, juices, or isolated plant enzymes such as papain. Carica papaya commonly appears in tropical fruit juices, smoothies, jams, meat tenderizers, chewable supplements, and various confectionery items.
Carica papaya is vegan because it is entirely of plant origin. The manufacturing methods used to process papaya fruit, juice, or enzymes rely on mechanical pressing, dehydration, filtration, or water extraction, which do not involve animal tissues or animal-derived processing aids. Because no animal inputs are used in its cultivation, harvesting, or manufacturing, ingredients listed as carica papaya are suitable for a vegan diet.
We've built a vegan ingredients scanner that classifies food ingredients as "vegan", "non-vegan", or "potentially vegan".
It allows you to avoid non-vegan ingredients - just take a picture of a product's ingredient list, and the app tells you if the product is vegan or not.
